Virtual Conventions - The latest idea?
With the growth of the internet - and especially highspeed connections - seems like a virtual convention was inevitable. See our review of the first, Vir-Con, held August 2002 here. For those who have no idea of what I’m talking about though, here is a small primer of virtual conventions.
Virtual conventions are basically either one that happens totally on the internet (like Scifi.com tried a few times), or one held in cyberspace in conjunction with a real-world convention. This gives people from all over the world - including those who may never have the opportunity to go to a real-world convention - a chance to experience one.
What takes place? If held with a real-world convention, guest sessions are often webcast so you can watch their presentations. Sometimes you can also ask questions that are relayed to them. Both types can offer chats with the celebrity guests, autographs, etc. Usually they also offer a virtual dealers room letting you buy items online (think of a lot of links to sci-fi store websites), can do some games or contests, etc.
This is a new field for conventions but only time will tell how it will develop.
